Chapter 25 : Reinforcements
ReinforcementsYuewu and the young boy—one low on mana and the other low on health—were both in dire situations, but on the surface, it was Dawn's Light who looked to be in the worst shape.
As a swordsman, his base defense was naturally higher than any class other than the Holy Knight, and his Taunt-type skills were maxed out. He always had to charge in first, plunging into the monster horde to tank damage and control the crowd.
Earlier, when teammates could help spread out the pressure, the situation was manageable. Every time a large group of monsters gathered around, Yuewu would unleash a skill, follow up with a Whirlwind Slash, and quickly wipe out a big portion of them.
However, as Yuewu's mana bar was depleted and she could no longer suppress the enemy with skills, the Wall-eating Rats' assault grew fiercer. Soon, Dawn's Light was completely covered in massive rats, until his entire body was submerged by them.
His once-sturdy health bar was now plummeting at a terrifying speed, visibly shrinking under the relentless attacks that found their way through every crack.
Finally, Yuewu's mana bar recovered to above 100, and she unleashed Ice Spike again, whose cooldown had just ended.
Unfortunately, because of that skill downtime, the number of Wall-eating Rats surrounding Dawn's Light had grown countless—layer upon layer. The ones on the surface were severely injured by her attack, but their bodies acted as a shield, leaving even more monsters beneath them unscathed and still furiously gnawing on everything living they could swallow.
Yuewu was still unwilling to give up and followed up with two more skills, but the results remained discouraging. At this rate, their defeat was inevitable; it was just a matter of time.
Elsewhere, Cecilia had already run several hundred meters away. At that moment, she was standing atop the village wall, her expression worried as she stared in the direction of Dawn's Light and the others.
Yuewu's guess was correct—Cecilia wasn't just keen-eyed. As a bat capable of receiving ultrasound, her hearing was even more powerful. Within the allowances of the game system, if she quieted her mind, she could even hear faint noises from a kilometer away.
That's why, the first time she heard the frenzied "sssk, sssk" sounds of the Wall-eating Rats gathering, she reacted on instinct.
Run as far as you can—just get away.
She had no choice. Perhaps because a team of three around level 15 had grouped up, the difficulty, already balanced once, had been multiplied even further. This time, the Wall-eating Rats were just too many. By listening alone, Cecilia could estimate that there were at least 500 of them now.
And that number was still rising.
"Judging by the time...they should just about be at their limits now..." she sighed softly, thinking.
She knew her actions weren't exactly fair—they were, to put it bluntly, rather like betraying her teammates.
In fact, she did want to go back and help, but with her pathological fear of rats, she'd probably only make things worse if she went back. Close-range combat was out of the question, leaving only "Sky Fission" as something she could barely use.
But more important than losing a battle was that her class must never be exposed; under no circumstances could she use Vampire skills in front of anyone except Gu Yanxi.
"That's right, how did I forget about you again?"
Her mood slowly calmed, and Cecilia finally remembered—she'd forgotten about her level 10 pet, which was now strong enough to be a valuable combatant.
With so many Wall-eating Rats, wasn't this the perfect feast for the Darkwing Demon Bat?
She summoned the Darkwing Demon Bat once more. After leveling up to 10, its size had more than doubled—standing over two meters tall now. While it still wasn't as massive as when it was a world-class boss, it was already showing the ferocity of a true beast: blood-red eyes wide, fangs bared, simply standing there with wings not yet fully unfurled was enough to give anyone a sense of overwhelming pressure.
She gave the Darkwing Demon Bat a light kick, and it obediently lowered its head, hot breaths spilling from its blood-red mouth, practically panting like a dog.
Seeing this, Cecilia couldn't help but wonder if it had been a dog in its past life.
Coincidentally, she'd raised a little black dog as a child. This way, she could solve the naming problem for the Darkwing Demon Bat—killing two birds with one stone.
So, Cecilia simply gave the order, "Little Black, go help them wipe out all those big rats. Don't leave a single one alive!"

Upon receiving its master's command, the Darkwing Demon Bat slowly unfurled its wings, uttered a silent, low growl, then powerfully flapped its wing membranes to stir up a fierce gale. Its massive body rose from the ground, soaring like an enormous black bird toward the depths of the village.
Although only level 10 and unequipped with any pet gear, its growth stats as a world-class boss meant the Darkwing Demon Bat had exceptionally high health, attack, and agility—absolutely matching or surpassing the stats of same-level or even higher melee class players.
Moreover, perhaps due to the bloodline suppression of a high-class monster over lower-class ones, the Darkwing Demon Bat tore through Wall-eating Rats with extreme efficiency. Cecilia felt quite reassured by this.
By themselves, Dawn's Light and Yuewu clearly couldn't deal with so many Wall-eating Rats. But with the addition of a giant, flying tank that could both take and dish out damage, they'd at least get a breather, and that should be enough.
Since flying monsters regularly defy gravity, their speed is naturally fast. In less than ten seconds, the Darkwing Demon Bat had reached the battlefield.
Below, things had grown desperate—Yuewu and the boy, much like Cecilia had done before, had climbed onto a rooftop more than two meters tall, escaping the monsters' attacks for the moment.
The surrounding Wall-eating Rats were gnawing furiously at the building. Judging by the damage, their perch wouldn't last long.
Thanks to the swordsman's thick skin, Dawn's Light was still holding out on the street, but by now, he was completely submerged beneath innumerable giant rats—visible only as a two-meter-high bulge, like a sightless slime flailing blindly through the narrow alley.
The first glimpse of the Wall-eating Rats set the Darkwing Demon Bat's already ferocious face into an even more savage expression. With a chilling howl, it adjusted its flight path and dove straight into the rat swarm in the middle of the street.
"What... what is that...?!"
The rat disaster wasn't over, and suddenly another terrifying monster appeared. The inexperienced boy stared in shock, muttering to himself.
"Don't worry, that's our companion."
Yuewu had also seen the descending Darkwing Demon Bat, and a deep sense of envy flickered in her eyes as she slowly tried to comfort him.
