Chapter 22 : Fear
Chapter 22 : Fear
FearMore than ten minutes passed. Upon receiving the news about the world-class boss, Dawn's Light and Yuewu hurriedly rushed to Desolate Village at the first opportunity. After a round of searching, they finally saw that familiar white figure outside a secluded little courtyard.
"System notification: Player [Cecilia] invites you to join the team!"
Before the two of them even had a chance to catch their breath, Cecilia had already sent over a team invitation.
In a hurry, Dawn's Light pressed the accept button and was the first to look towards the young man not far from Cecilia's side, asking in puzzlement, "Who is this?"
"A passerby. He helped me out a little just now. For this boss fight, I plan to take him along."
Cecilia glanced calmly at the boy beside her and introduced him to Dawn's Light.
Shen Yifan blushed and nodded, greeting them in a barely audible voice, "Hello."
Since he could instantly recognize Cecilia, he naturally could also easily identify these two people.
Dawn's Light and Yuewu, just like Cecilia, were top-level players at the pinnacle of the national server—both strong candidates to be the first to obtain the "Legend" title in the arena.
It was a gathering of the top players, and yet someone as insignificant as him had joined their midst. At this thought, shen Yifan couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
The gap between people really was unbelievably wide...
No one paid much attention to his feelings. On the other side, Yuewu was already impatient. She strode up in a couple of steps, grabbed Cecilia's hand, and asked urgently, "Sister Ce, quickly tell us what's going on with this world boss?"
Sister Ce?
Cecilia's expression grew slightly odd. She never would have imagined that her in-game ID could be called this way.
Still, since they had known each other for so long, and she was well aware of Yuewu's usual personality, Cecilia didn't mind. She only gently pulled her hand free, looked directly into Yuewu's eyes, and explained calmly:
"The real name of Desolate Village is Blood-soaked Soil Village. In this village's ancestral hall, I found a letter from long ago, detailing the reason the village was abandoned. After that, the world-class boss quest was unlocked. This time the boss is E-level, so its level shouldn't be very high."
"Indeed, if it's an E-level world boss, then it should be a sure thing,"
Dawn's Light nodded, a faint smile of joy appearing on his face.
During this period, he had entrusted all his company affairs in real life to his subordinates, throwing himself wholeheartedly into Legend of Kaloran. In just a few days, he had already made considerable progress, and becoming part of the country's top esports team was well within reach.
Since teaming up with Cecilia for the first time, Yuewu had also benefited greatly. Naturally, she understood just how important the world notification was. She was sincerely grateful that Cecilia invited the two of them to join her this time.
"Since everyone's here, let's not waste any time and set out,"
Cecilia said.
Hearing Cecilia's words, Yuewu glanced around but didn't see another familiar face. Puzzled, she asked, "Wait, isn't Sister Yan supposed to come as well? She's not joining us this time?"
"She's still doing the arena,"
Cecilia answered. Then, as if remembering something, she casually asked, "Didn't you just come from the arena? What kind of win streak is she on now?"
"I'm not sure about now. When I left, I think she'd... reached forty-seven or forty-nine straight wins?"
Yuewu tilted her head, thought for a moment, and then marveled incredulously.
"That's terrifying speed—I can hardly believe she's a priest."
"Priest?"
Hearing their conversation, Dawn's Light fell into deep thought. He gently stroked his stubbly chin, pondered for a moment, and spoke slowly:
"Normally, priests in these kinds of online games don't have such high combat power, but there are always exceptions. I once met a terrifyingly high-damage priest in another game. In the later stages, she could destroy an entire small guild with a single skill."
"You mean... a shadow priest?"
Yuewu reacted quickly and blurted out the question.
Shadow priest?
Hearing this unfamiliar term, Cecilia felt a jolt in her heart.
At that moment, she couldn't help but recall the list of skills she'd seen in Gu Yanxi's skill panel.
Whether it was Shadow Form, torment of Pain, or Heartbreak Curse—all seemed a bit sinister, indeed somehow related to "shadow".
Could it be that, because of some unexpected twist, Gu Yanxi had accidentally unlocked a different class for priest?
But only a few seconds later, Yuewu dismissed this guess herself:
"No, the class transfer feature hasn't been unlocked in the game yet. Who knows if the next update will add it. It shouldn't be possible to be a shadow priest—maybe the system has a bug?"
"True,"
Dawn's Light agreed, glancing toward Cecilia as he spoke. "Cecilia, do you know? If you don't, you can ask her next time."
"I'm not too clear on the details either. I'll ask her later."
Since Gu Yanxi wasn't present, there was no way to reach a conclusion no matter how long they discussed it. So Cecilia simply ended the topic and led everyone toward the mountain behind the village.
It had to be said that a group's efficiency was indeed much higher than Cecilia being alone.
Not long after entering the village, the only weakling in the team—the boy—walked cautiously to Cecilia's side, hesitated for a moment, then bit the bullet and said, "Boss... let me scout ahead for you."
Cecilia looked at him expressionlessly, then calmly refused, "No need. There are too many monsters in this area and your level is too low. You might not make it back alive. Just stay put."
In Cecilia's eyes, this boy's level was at most seven or eight, and the Wall-eating Rats in Desolate Village were about the same.
If he were to go off on his own and get surrounded by dozens or even hundreds of rats, not even a hundred Cecilias could save him.
They'd probably just be thinking about how fast they could run instead.
Hearing this, the boy looked a little unconvinced, stubbornly insisting, "It's not my first time on this map... There aren't that many monsters. Only four or five spawn at a time, and I can handle that alone."
"Really?"
Cecilia looked at him with a half-smile.
Her eyebrows were like painted flowers, as beautiful as a lotus emerging from water.
It should've been a beautiful scene, but for some reason, the boy felt her smile was a little off this time.
It wasn't a polite or a fake smile, nor was it quite a helpless one, though it was close.
While the boy was still wondering what emotion was behind Cecilia's expression, she turned to Dawn's Light and Yuewu, and spoke in a slightly trembling voice:
"Sorry... I just remembered I have something to do. Can I leave for a while?"
